I agree, Petsmart is partially at fault here as a whole, but place more blame on each individual store. The store here, while I don't agree with how many they keep in each "cubicle", is great about fish. In fact, my wife and I purchased our Midas from Petsmart. However, the manager of the Fish/Small Animal section here is studying to be a small animal vet and is also an avid aqua hobbyist, so that's a plus.
I say I don't agree because there are normally 6-8 5" or 6" oscars in a tank, but from what I've seen, at least here, the only signs of damage are from natural aggression and you can find signs of this when you go to any LFS, privately owned or national conglomerate.
