Hi guys, i bought a gorgeous little 4-5 inch aro over the weekend and everything seemed fine, was in a large 5 x2x2 tank and was eating etc for the first 3 or 4 nights. Woke up friday morning and he was floating vertically with his head at the surface. I immediately set him up in a hospital tank, half water from the tank he was in, half fresh water. Some sea salt in the hospital tank, a heater set at 30 degrees and an air stone. When i moved him from the large tank he didnt put up a fight, he could have been dead in the net if he wasnt flicking his head once or twice.
2 days later and the situation seems to have improved a minute amount. He lies at the bottom constantly, unless i disturb him and he swims for 20 seconds and then lies down again. He refuses to eat and when he does swim, seems to be flicking his head left and right erratically.
Does anyone have any advice at all regarding what else i can do!?
I have owned arowanas in the past and had no problem, he is in the large tank with some tinfoils, some silver dollars and an oscar (which to my knowledge so far is an absolute pussy cat, no problems with him and ANY fish, including inch long silver dollars, but could he be to blame)
HELP PLEASE

What else can i do, Thanks so much

He has a small mark, absolutely tiny on the top of his back, Not sure if its an injury or if im completely over looking into things, Will take some pictures as soon as possible.

how high is the water in the tank, he/she may have jumped and injured themselves, give it a while... if its still swimming every so often it should be fine, more then likely the fast movements of the silver dollars would have spooked it, lower the water in the main tank when your introducing the aro back in.

Ok thanks alot, very interesting! So you think just leave him in the hospital tank until he seems alright? He'll recover from this injury? In the meantime, anything i should do? Still try and feed him?

Dont want to sound like a bi**h but its not gonna make,my friend had the same experience...Suddenly one day it was on the ground then day by day it started getting better and finally R.I.P...It was not taking food as well.Good luck with yours hope it survives and if it does im curious to know what it is.?

Wondering if you ever found a solution for your aro as mine started doing the same last night. It's housed in my quarantine tank with a Leopard Ctenopoma since I bought the two out of the same tank at the LFS two weeks ago. I would appreciate any advise.

only thing you can do is make sure your bio filters are working correctly & your water is fresh , do plenty part water changes add primafix or melafix . If the conditions are right the fish should be able to heal its self in time

I wouldnt add any chemicals until a noticeable sign of illness occurs. Id bet it has to do with quality of water or smashing into the lid/wall of your tank.Is it gasping as well as doing the head shakes? Id increase the temp of the tank to 82 and dim the lights on it. Also does your tank have painted sides/back? Cuz it could also be stressed from lots of movement outside its tank.

And be sure theres no ammonia in the tank. Usual test strips wont pick up levels of it. It should be absolute 0. Look for a brown colouration instead of bright red on the gills. Also look for clouding of the eyes.
