i discovered, on monday, my oscar with what i thought was white spot. my brother also thought it could be white spot. he is nearing the end of his treatment but if anything its got worse, it doesnt look like white spot to me, maybe fungus or something, looks very flaky and it is on his fins also could anyone shed any light or a diagnosis and/or treatment? he was off his food over the weekend, but i wasnt in much to catch whatever it was early enough. he was scratching his sides on the gravel, hes stopped that so much now. hes still off his food, occasionally eating polypterus' pellet or a worm. ive been doing regular water changes, 40% every week and a half. polypterus is his only tank mate, he came from my channa tank over a week ago. the filter came form upstairs in my other oscar tank 3 weeks ago when i purchased him. any help is much appreciated. i dont want to loose him

O's are pretty hardy and can come back from pretty bad condition. I would do as advised above, as well as keeping the lights off. Many of these types of infections spread with exposure to light.

I believe it's one tablespoon per gallon for salt treatment. Use non-iodized salt, kosher salt works fine. Just dissolve the salt in some tank water before putting it in.

quarintine your oscar, riase the temp to 82 to 88, and salt you buy at a pet store....NOT for salt water fish....but ask for salt for sick fish. it's a teaspoon per gal.

It's called "aquarium salt" and you can get it at your lfs. There are directions on the carton for how much to use. I would start with pimafix and up the temp to 82 at least. PLEASE don't for get to add an extra air stone when you do this so your fish don't suffocate from lack of o2 in the water!
