Poplar trees for fishtank??

Cedars can be used,as well as bald cypress
And certain pines. But they need to be in water for a while before suitable for use in most aquaria,heck I can even get driftwood here in the Sonoran desert,just takes more effort.
Go to any reservoir and look for driftwood,in some enviorments driftwood can last hundreds to thousands of years.

There is a major river hat runs though my area but it is full of polluts and I’m not sure I would want that in my tank....maybe I’ll just stick to the steep prices of Lfs :-)

No small streams? Perhaps connected and upstream of the river?
 
I personally wouldn't trust anything out of a watershed in the Edmonton area. Or north, west, east, or south of there. lol The vast majority of what you find won't be hard wood, it will be soft, and full of pathogens/bacteria/pollution. LFS options are pretty bad in Edmonton, Calgary typically has a LOT more to offer, with better prices.

You are most likely correct! I’m not sure I would trust it either!!!!

Again you are correct about the lfs here as well!

Do you have a recommended lfs in Calgary hat you shop at? I go to Calgary a few times a year.

Also, do you ever come to Edmonton or go to Calgary for the fish auctions?
 
Denis at Gold Aquariums has always been at the top of my list for fish, and for dry goods, including driftwood, Pisces typically has a very good selection. I no longer do the auctions, too tempting. lol

I haven’t been to that lfs but will make it a point to visit next time I am there!!!i googles and google recommended paradise emporium or something with a similar name, I wants too impressed with the fish, they had a good selection but the ones I was interested in were of poor quality.

I was going to say the next edmonton auction is coming up in a month or so, I’m keeping my eye out for a 100-125g tank (I’m kind of cheap atm, and I’m not expecting to see it at he aviation)
 
Pisces Pet Emporium. Fish quality varies like most LFS, but generally a pretty solid selection of dry goods. Denis at Golds has the best fish selection and quality, but the good fish go fast - sometimes as fast as they arrive.
