I remember seeing these guys many moons ago,do any of you guys remember these cichlids perhaps you owned them or maybe even have pics please feel free to share as I haven't seen these guys in over 30 years
I believe the name port cichlid, is/was a kind of catchall term for the Cichlasoma genus, which has been broken down into a number of species (although C portalegrense is probably the true port).
I have kept C. dimerus from Uruguay.
A fascinating species that easily takes water temps down into the 50sF , I believe they are healthier when they get a winter cool down.
Mine spawned in unheated tanks, and in my pond in Milwaukee at those low temps.
I would toss semi adults into the pond in spring, pull out hundreds of juvies in fall.
They are around if you look for them. C. dimerus is pretty popular and can usually be found online from hobbyist breeders. Right now Jeff Rapps is selling two port types, C. bimaculatus and C. dimerus.
They continue to be a fairly popular cichlid in the hobby even as flashier types have taken over. I am currently working with a xanthic form of what is believed to be Cichlasoma amazonarum, which is also one of the port-types.
