Gotta play by the rules.

Good ole' Mexico City, how I miss you. :) Come to think of it, I'll stick with Oregon....

I hope this doesn't end up shutting down the Portland Aquarium before I have a chance to go there!
haha no i really do miss oregon...especially the weather

Good! I'm happy seeing the people who take illegally get nailed. FL is very protective of it's animals. Right now the state won't even issue an IMP permit for lemons, and the spotted eagle rays are VERY touchy to get paper work for.

I'm glad to see FWC at work to keep animals safe.

This is why you guys see me contstantly posting to 'keep it legal' when talking of collecting on your own.

Speaking from just a customers stand point, wouldn't this news make people want to go there even more?

It won't. He was attempting to get the species for another aquarium. The Portland Aquarium has maintained it's stance on the collection having the proper permits. The empty puffin exhibit for example awaiting proper permits.

Ammon Covino Ammon Covino

MILWAUKIE, OR (KPTV) -

The co-owner of the Portland Aquarium who is facing charges of illegally purchasing marine life has been arrested again.

Ammon Covino, 39, of Meridian, ID is accused of violating the conditions of his pretrial release. He was arrested Tuesday, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office, District of Idaho.

Covino was first arrested Feb. 21 in Idaho on a Nov. 8, 2012 indictment out of Florida. He is accused of purchasing Florida protected marine life in interstate commerce.

The indictment alleges that Covino and Christopher Conk purchased four spotted eagle rays and two lemon sharks for $6,300. Investigators said the animals were harvested illegally and without a permit.

Covino is the president of the Idaho Aquarium and co-owner of the Portland Aquarium in Milwaukie that opened in 2012.

Federal prosecutors have filed a motion to revoke Covino's bond.

Investigators said he directed his nephew, Pete Covino IV, to contact an individual in Florida and destroy information related to a recent order for undersized and illegal nurse sharks.

Pete Covino, 20, of Star, ID is now charged with obstruction of justice.

Both men appeared in Boise federal court Wednesday morning. Ammon Covino is due back in court Friday, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office, to determine if he should be detained pending transfer to the Southern District of Florida.

Nothing against Jamie (he has some affiliation I think) but that aquarium sucks from a hobbyist stand point. Wasn't worth the gas and admission, I can go to a fish store for most of that for free more or less. My little cousin loved it though.

That poor touch tank, we got there in the afternoon, and by the time we got to it the fish were not hungry and the bottom was littered with uneaten food. Kind of misleading when you get up to the front cause they charge you $10 for food for all the tanks and but if you don't get there at opening they won't be eating. Touched a shark though so that was kinda cool I guess.
