Possible arowana killer

If you froze the fish, save it. We'll do it when I get there. I'll need a fillet knife, magnifying glass, and 12 Newcastles.

no I didn't. It was hard enough euthanizing it. I really didn't hink i could cut it open afterwards. Now I really wish I would have

I think this is a very real possability. when mine did this I wass feeding sharp frozen chunks of hikari krill. Since then I have started soaking them in warm water to remove any sharp edges from the food. It's very hard to see one of your favorite fish go this way. We should definatly take this into consideration and realy think before feeding anything sharp to our aros.. Great write-up Rallysman!!!

I agree that Rally {Levi} gave a tremendous write up considering all he was going through and we have {ALL} already learned to be cautious of the food we feed to our fish... in what texture and size and amount even if it is the finest food money can buy.

Again sorry for your loss!!! and thanks for the heads up... I will not be feeding my fish shelled prawns (with or w/o tails.) There was just a thread the other day where someone's large silver had a shelled prawn stuck in the aros throat and it couldn't open it's mouth! luckily the owner was smart (and brave) enough to pull the fish out hold it down and pry the mouth open with a spoon.... I'll stick to gut loaded crickets meal worms and earth worms thank you....
So Rallysman your not out of that aro game are you!?! So you have any other aros or are you thinking of picking up a new one! best of luck in the long haul...

ouch, damnit.

rally, thats weaksauce. seriously. i've never even seen anyone go thru that. but i guess we can all learn from it.

sorry again Levi that aro was a nice one.
as for feeding prawns unshelled, i have always removed the head and tail section and cut of the legs but leave the main section of shell on as it is good for colour.
i read on some forum years ago to do this due to this exact thing although it is second nature for me to do this it never clicked in my mind it could be this thar caused your aro to die.
i a sure it was on arowanaclub.com.

Wether feeding the tail on shrimp was or wasn't the cause, it is a definite danger. It apears we do have cases of aros dying from ascities, I wonder how many of the other unexplained aro deaths could have been caused by it? There does not seem to be very much info on the web about ascities. There are even a couple websites that state it is the same as dropsy, which it is not.

Being that fresh/frozen shrimp and freeze dried krill is such a big part of most aros diets, it would be good to see an Warning sticky posted for this. Delgado wrote up a very good thread regarding shrimp and reference to that thread should be included

I am truly sorry for your loss Rally, hopefully we can prevent this from happening to others.
