Possible For Me To Get A Carp?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have a pond with goldfish that breed constantly throughout the summer, although the parents are orange, white, etc, when I drain the pond in fall , about 70% (maybe more) of the surviving juvies appear to be wild color (brown), and normal wild shape.
Don't know if this is because the wild type are harder for predators to find, or if the wild color is still the dominant one.
I believe many goldfish breeders hand pick the most colorful, and sell the rest as feeders.

You should check with koi breeders, they usually cull few carps if they are not colorful and will be glad to give you some culls.

I've kept a carp before and probably by far my favorite fish I've had. The only downside is that they do get a little messy but thats not a huge problem. As for the wild goldfish I would just go with the 10 cent brown feeder unless you can get one cheaper from a goldfish breeder or something.

The progenitor of goldfish is the Prussian Carp or "Gibbel". Yes you can get one but you must have it shipped to you from Canada. You will also need to fill out a "Declaration of entry" form. If your importing to California I can tell you exactly which forms you need to get.
