Possible Future Pair?

I've had a flower horn pair with a bigger Midas, and he would often change between dominant and submissive depending on her mood. She laid eggs, but was paranoid and wouldn't let the experienced male do his job. A few days later (and many failed attempts from the male to help care for the babies) she ate them and he flipped out. Nearly killed her before I could separate them...

Point is that it's possible for a smaller male to pair with a larger female and behave submissively, but its usually short lived

I'm not saying its impossible because I know it has happened, just saying its unlikely. Sound like your male wanted to breed with the female but she wasn't paired with him which is why she never let him near the eggs. Its not uncommon for female to lay without a partner.

True and very possible, but they were the only two in the tank and were showing all the typical pre spawning behavior (other than the alternating behavior from the male that the female seemed receptive to) until eggs were actually laid. It was really weird, lol
