Hey guys,

first off I'm absolutely brand new to this sort of hobby, doing my research into it as I'm really fascinated by the red belly piranha's. (Who isn't?).

I live in Burlington Ontario, just outside Toronto. I'm thinking of getting a shoal of red belly piranha's some time in the near future.

Reading over these forums so far has been a big help. What I haven't been able to find so far is the rough estimate cost of rbp's once I do find them, and the optimal size tank for 6 - 7 of them. Along with the cost of appropriate live feeders. This all started with a live mouse feeder seen on youtube which is what caught my attention to them in the first place.

oh and of course, are these things even legal in Ontario?

I'm certainly not going to rush into anything, but if I am going to do it I want to make sure that I do it right, and that I've got all the information needed to make an educated decision.

Not familiar, at all, with piranhas, but I'm guessing for a school of 6 or 7, you're going to need a "monster" tank, something in the 200+ gallon range.

As for feeders, goldfish are not recommended as a main food source: They have very little nutritional value and tend to be disease ridden.

Don't know if they are legal in Canada.

I'm sure someone will respond with more definitive info on the size of a tank needed.

And hey, welcome to the hobby and MFK!

I agree on the 200 gallon + tank size. They are legal here in Winnipeg, so I don't see there being an issue in Ontario.

:welcome: if you want p's go by this rule 1 for every 15 gallons...hope u find wat u want

welcome to MFK. i dont know much about piranhas but i know that u r going to need a large tank. dont rush into things, and plan ahead.

Exactly, there is no sense rushing into anything about something like this. I figure I'm going to do at least a months worth of research to just see if I can afford it, and have the time the be able to do it. Plus I'll have to make some room by removing some old crap in the house in order to fit an appropriate tank size.

Thanks Citrinellus didn't notice that section yet, lots of answered questions there :D.

I had 6 RBPs in a 55 for a while and they were fine... for long term, I think the above posters are overestimating. You could probably get by with 100gal.

You can feed them feeders + pellets.

Feeders are fine as long as they are healthy.
