Banff city has an introduced population of foreign fish in the river. They have been there for decades. Most likely introduced by hobbyists. They survive the very cold winters by staying in the runoff from the hot springs. While not natural, they are protected.
Western Mosquitofish, Sailfin Molly, Guppy, Green Swordtail, Brook Stickleback(native?), African Jewelfish, Convict, Angelfish.
Well, they did have all those species. But something else has been introduced that is out competing or eating them. I don't remember what.
But the Jewels and Convicts are still doing ok. The others are there, but they are getting their butts kicked.
There is a little fish watching platform on one of the hiking trails. It hangs out over the water so you can lay down and get a good view. And there is one hot spring about 30 feet across that has some rare snail that only exists in that location, nowhere else in the world.
All of these are protected in a National Park. So if you mess with them at all, you are going to jail. They take it pretty seriously. Otherwise I might have stuffed a few snails in my pocket. But they are all there is anywhere, so I guess it's best to leave them alone.
If I find some pictures I'll post the link. Not exciting fish. But it is interesting that tropicals are living so far north.
