Possible Parasite?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Figured out a main cause of stress. It’s the water from the tap. There’s large amounts of dissolved gasses that have gotten worse thanks to the winter months. So much that it clouds the tank when filling. This would explain the shedding of his slime coat, him not liking water changes, getting darker when the tank is refilling, and the flashing that follows.

The big question, now what?

Smaller, more frequent water changes. I have the same issue here in the winter months, but never had any issues with the FH that I kept in the past.

Instead of filling straight to the tank fill a bucket and allow the water to sit for a bit to let the gasses escape. Than use a small pump attached to a hose to pump the water in.

I thought about doing this. I have a heavily planted 20g long with Red Rili shrimp, mystery snails and some fish that I do water changes in a similar manner. But, the tank takes care of itself and I only need to do a 3-4 gallon water change every 4 weeks. No pump needed. I’m going to try the method RD suggested. If it seems like too much work, I’ll buy a tote, pump and go that route.

I’ve been doing smaller water changes and mixing the water, Prime and epsom salt in buckets and waiting until the water is clear, then adding the water to the tank. This seems to have reduced his stress during water changes. Glad I recently purchased that 50ft python. ?. His prolapse is doing a lot better.

I’m feeding without soaking the pellets in epsom salt. Currently got him on NLS and slowly feeding more each day, working back up to his normal portions, two times a day.

I got rid of the 30” long spray bar, and tucked the heater back by the intake. He was running into the heater, and that crazy long spray bar before. Gotta child proof the tank with these things. Ha!

In regards to feeding, I’ve noticed several other posts where people are feeding a variety of pellets. I’ve got Omega One Color Enhancing, Hikari Cichlid Bio Gold+, and Blood Red Parrot+ on hand. Should I stick to strictly NLS or can I mix it up?

Mixing up pellets should not be an issue, just introduce new foods slowly, and realize that some fish can become picky choosing one food over others.

Thanks for the advice. I’m going to stick with the small/mini pellets, and maybe break up the medium ones. He will eat anything, and is constantly skimming the surface and biting at the condensation on the glass lids in search of food. The aquarium is in the living room right near the furniture. He’s always looking for attention.

IMHO it's a good idea to train ones fish to eat anything offered, but over the years I have learned that sometimes, with some fish, it's easier said than done. lol

IMHO it's a good idea to train….

The NLS was the only food he’s hesitated and spit out, but that lasted not even a minute. I think it’s because I got the mini pellets, (didn’t realize how tiny they are) and they’re the first sinking food he’s had. However, I can hear him chewing the mini pellets, whereas the medium Hikari, he was pretty much just swallowing them whole a majority of the time. Such a smart fish, but greedy when it comes time to eat. Ha!

And the white stringy poo is back. It was normal for about a week. Only feeding NLS. Feeling a bit frustrated.

Update: He’s doing well, and while he’ll accept any food I put in the tank, I’m strictly feeding NLS. I can only get decent pics when I first turn on the light. Otherwise, he just goes bonkers when I’m near the tank. His eyes are a deeper red and he just pops more in general after being fed and the lights been on for a bit. Hopefully he’ll chill out once he’s bigger and I can get some good pics instead of just on the fly. Thanks again to everyone for the helpful advice and I’ll periodically post updates as he grows.

Also, open to any ideas on what type of FH he might be as he was sold to me as unknown at my lfs.

Now that he’s better I’ve named him. Here’s Harry in good health.

Looking good. I'm glad Harry is now healthy. Right now he appears a ZZ red dragon but if he fades which I still have a suspicion that may be happening he would be a Goldenbase. Looking forward to many updates ?.
