I know it's their personality to be spooked easily but i thought i'd ask. My 8" silver aro is in a 125 gal with a small pleco. I was wondering if there's a way to make him less spooked. He know his owner (me) & is fine when i'm near the tank. But gets spooked when anyone else is near the tank. I'll probably get bashed for this post but any advice would be greatly appreciated.

theres no reason to get bashed for this post ...it is a good question.. but no easy answers... the best you can do is leave the light off... and try not to make sudden movements.. tell everyone to enter his area calmly.. and try never to wear red.. for some reason red really sets them off.. i have red Pj's and i make sure i don't enter the fish room in them.. my big old silver gets rattled at even a glimpse of me in red..

In my experience, I've had a couple big silvers and when they were juvies they were easily spooked and extremely jumpy. As they got bigger, they sort of just grew out of it. The big one I had I was able to grab him in the tank and practically pick him up

Thanks for the reply...Wow i didn't know that Red spooks them even more....
i do not know if it is every arowana that the color red effects to this extreme.. but i know it is commonly mentioned here in the arow forum... and i know for a fact it is a direct link to my guy spazzing out... so it is something to watch out for.. mine is almost 8 years old .. and i had him since a baby.. and i do think as they grow they tend to relax more.. but arowanas are unpredictable at jumping... and nothing even has to excite them to do it.. they could be all alone and in a peaceful atmosphere and still jump.. so always remember to keep a weight on the top of tank and all holes{even the smallest openings covered} so he does not sliver through.. so many of them are found dead on the floor.. at any age just from jumping... something that they do naturally in the wild...

Get it into a bigger tank. I saw and incredible difference with my two silver once the were moved to a proper sized tank. I can even now stand in front of the tank with a red shirt on.

he is only 8 inches in a 125gal with just one pleco... thats big enough for now..i would consider this tank a proper size tank

Ya we can debate all day long as to what is a proper sized tank. I was only stating my experience I had with my two silver arowana. Many will state that it is common for silver arowana to be skittish and jumpy, but maybe it is that these fish actually need to be in larger tanks then what we perceive as proper.

i won't debate that every fish who has a larger tank is better off ... larger is always better...i totally agree... but a 125gal for an 8 inch silver is fine and in my opinion i doubt this would make a difference in his jumpy personality..

my silver was in a 180gal and in the middle of my livingroom...the tank was also in the path to the fridge so it got alot of trafic...it was jumpy at first, but it went away...everyone that came into the livingroom(witch was alot) never spooked it it got to 24"+ when i sold it...i think if they are in high traffic areas they will get used to it...if they are in a fish room with little activity they get used to the feeder and a jumpy to everyone else...
