their nuchal hump grows from their dominant rank in the tank and genetics, try to have your male be the dominant one in your tank and it may grow but if he doesnt have the genetics for it than he may never get a big hump no matter what you try

How can i make him more dominent? He is the only male gt in the tank. There is 2 comps in with him but they are really small. I have another male gt a third the size of him in another tank i could put in but i dont want it to die. i also put a big mirror behind the tank so he cansee his reflection, thought that might help alittle.

i herd to get the hump it has to be storing fat in its head from not growing any more .... but also what sarah88 said

It has nothing to do with not growing anymore. My guy did most of his growing while he had the nuchul hump. I do believe the intake of food needs to be higher than the fish needs as the nuchul hump is essentially a fat reserve. As already stated, diet, water quality, tank temp and tank hierarchy will all play a role in developing this hump but the fish needs to have the genetic qualities to start with.

My old guy. (RIP)Wish I still had this one. He never started to grow a head until around 8"

There's bits and pieces of footage of him in this vid.:)

My current specimen. I don't expect him to grow a decent hump due to being in a comm tank where he will never be high on the hierarchy but he is still turning out ok..

whats a comp? and if he is the biggest cichlid in the tank then he is more than likely the dominant one just feed him well and keep his water clean like everyone has been saying and from there its just a wait and see game to see how he turns out

and greenterra those GTs are SWEET i personally actually prefer the smaller hump GTs
