I thought this would be a amusing thread. Post the most ridiculas prices your seen for fish. Here are two from our area.

a. 6" Five Bar Indo Dat: $200, marked as "Big Bar Dat" - Hayward
b. 3" Three Bar Indo Dat, marked as "Widebar" $375 - San Francisco

Most people dont realise how hard running a LFS is and what may seem to be outrageous prices to some are in fact quite reasonable when running a 7 day a week, 12 hour a day business. Livestock is a risky business that isnt insured.

While there may be cheaper places available, most cheaply priced outlets have gone bankrupt or not lasted. Its amazing how many people want RARE/QUALITY and CHEAP in the same fish or product. I respectfully suggest you simply not buy fish you think are too expensive for you. If someone is buying them then they are not TOO expensive. Besides, you havent seen EXPENSIVE fish until you have come to Australia.

oops hope this doesnt come accross as too critical but thats how I see things.

An LFS near me has a $500 motoro. It has been there for about a year.

Nope not really, but in our area, 2-3" Indos are usually marked $20-30. This is at about 5-6 stores I frequent. And I've only once come across one store like that has mis marked fish that should sell for $30 and marked up to $300+. I do think there is a fair market price, and ever area is different, but the one's I posted are WAY above market value in CA in the USA. In the one case 10Xs market value. I don't see many store marking fish up that high, even with our high tax in Cali.

FYI I worked at a pet store as a kid, and yes at 17yrs old I even paid $800 for a 4" Lizard (Cyclura Nubila Nubila - Ca Stock - David Blair in 1989). So I know animals cost a bit when they are rare.

I know of a guy that sells flowerhorns for 250 plus..... the guy no more than a couple miles down the street sells the same quality for 150 and under, which imo is a good price.....
