Post LFS OVER PRICED FISHs

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
3" Gold severums 24.99 ea
4" Clown loach 49.99 ea.
5" Silver Dollars 29.95 each or 2 for $50.00
3" very plain looking FH $150.00

our area is all over the board, however the rule of thumb is generally to mark it up 3-4 times over it's orginal purchase price...So if the LFS bought it for a dollar they sell for 4.00........welcome to OZ

In my experience most prices at LFS are negotiable, at least at Mom and Pop's. All I do is go in, ask if the owner/manager is there, and make an offer if I think a fish is over priced. Worse they can do is turn me down. This works really well if the fish I want is a trade in, beat up, or been in the store awhile.

the new lfs by me is actually pretty resonable with the live stuff. its the decor that he over prices. he had a 12-14" gar for $25 is that a decent price? i thought it was but i dont know about the prices of gars. the only thing he really over prices are the oscars at $15 for 2-3" ones. other than that he is usually cheaper than the chain stores. it really depends on supply and demand, if people really want it and cant get it from a store within say an hours drive then they will pay some outragous prices to get what they want. thats just my 2 cents

I always find it funny that unreasonable prices for you guy in the US are regular Canadian prices lol. Hence why I'm heading down to Tonawanda tomorrow!

You lucky b*****d! Have you been there before? I've bought lots of fish(ha ha) and plants from Tonawanda, but only through the mail.

there is a big difference when your doing retail as a business. you have to factor in start up cost, monthly overhead (rent, utilities, insurance, tax), salaries......... than you have fun things like stagnant stock, dead fish, cancelled orders...... than after all that stuff you can see if you have made any profits.

4" Sengal bichirs $40
2" oscars $30

Cichlids that will rapidly reproduce on wet paper towel...
$9.99 convicts
$7.99 jewels

At this shop that is consistently overpriced.

2" "Red Dragon Flowerhorn" for $250.00, was there for 3 months.
No humb on head or any red colorations.
When I did save enough $$$, it bellied up and the owner did not even know.
I asked the owner when the next one will arrive he said, "In 2 days"
Too bad, I already spent my $$$ on an Ipod.
