Where do you live? If you live in the united states I'd suggest just go fishing

If you don't I am not sure how to get them.... However I'd say the most beautiful fish from where I live (Minnesota, extremely far north in the United States) is the pumpkinseed sunfish. Honestly most of the fish aren't here aren't very pretty, they r tough and cool though, we have some cool northern pikes, lots of sunnys, bullhead catfish, some gars and the black crappie is another favorite

I am in the west coast. All we have is just dull colored bass and catfish.

a lot of the north american fish are dull colored, just how they are, what size tank do you have?

You guys that think all North American fish are dull need to go find some darters and dace. There are actually some quite colorful species.

These are not some of them though. These are some White and Lake sturgeon from the hatchery where I used to work

If anyone is in or near western Ohio and wants to check them out in person, they are in a public display area on the farm (Freshwater Farms of Ohio) and they actually permit you to pet them

I have a 150g but thinking of a 500-700 in future. I cannot afford heating for such a large tank so i am thinking of going to cold water specy.
This is beautiful

That pic appears to be a Louisina Long Ear Sun fish, great fish.

For that size, I would definately go with some pickeral or even a bowfin.

If you check my post history, you can see some pics and vids of my 75 gallon native. I have 2 Pumpkinseeds, 2 bluegill, 2 small bullhead cats (who are loaded with personality), and a few shinners.

For small tanks, find some darters or a sculpin. Sculpin are super cool mini-predators, think of a 4" grouper crossed with a rock fish

phh you live on the west coast and you say all natives are drab...where have you bee looking?...

Pumpkin seed. ..this is washed out due to stress from going in to a tank allot more orange on him..and they are everywhere


ok a little drab but i love these guys... Prickly sculpin.
