Hmm... well now you have me wondering fishlover. It was sold to me as a pictus, and I always thought it looked like all the pictus I had seen before. Looking on planet catfish I can see similarities with both. Any good tells for an ID?

Ok so i couldnt find anything that would allow for an absolute positive id one way or the other, the worst thing about it is my big encyclopedia of catfish is not with me. but the coloration of yours definately stands out. Most of the large pictus i have seen have very dark spots, where yours seem to have faded. Its hard to say if they have always been that way or not, cause you raised this fish not me. the second thing is that the spots are very symetrical. Something that is common in maculatus, where pictus tend to have more random spotting with them often running into eachother.

Its possible that one of the other members would be able to make an absolute positive id, but for me, i would say maculatus.

On another note. Robert S. You have a P. blochii and not a P. pictus.

I just keep raining on every ones parade today. Sorry guys.

His spots have actually darkened over time, but you may be right. I was noticing that pictus seem to have dark large spots on their tails, and mine has tiny spots. The pictus also look like they have a different tail shape than mine, so it looks like I have a Spotted Pim. Cool

So when are we going to see a REAL pictus?

You're breaking my heart with the correct ID, but I do appreciate it. It was sold to me as a Pictus so forgive my ignorance. I'll have to correct the guy who sold it to me. Either way it's a really cool cat, although I did enjoy thinking I had a 10 inch Pictus. :)

And yes Jeff he's in the 75 gallon tub waiting for the 300 to get up and running.

Ok,well how large can I expect a regular pictus cat to get.

anywhere from 7 to 10 inches. 10 inches are big

10 inches would be an act of god. 6 inches is usually the accepted adult size.

6" is acceptable , I was worrying they would outgrow my tank. and sense I could not afford and Synos, this was my last resort, very happy with them over all.

i had on that was best friends with my tsn and rtc lol they wouldnt eat him but he would bully the 2 and they were both a foot long and he was a measly 5 inches lol but i ended up getting rid of all my freshwater :(

Why on earth would you get rid of all your freshwater? I enjoy fresh a lot more than my old Marine. That might be because my parents gave away my favorite Panther Grouper when I was young.
The childhood scars!!!
