Im starting to spend a fortune on ray food. my rays are getting huge and are eating 2+ lbs of food per day. im wondering where u get your food and wht u are paying.

im currently getting-

11 lb boxes of smelt for $44
10 lb boxes of shrimp for $60

both from GFS gordon foods here in Michigan

im tryin to find better deal out there somewhere. please list if u can
 
damn a 11lb box of smelt is 22 here half i go to the mexican markets or asian markets find cheapest out here not sure if you have those type of markets out yur way
 
chinese market 4.4ld headless white shrimp $16.99 36/40 count per pound or 15.99 45-60/pound 4 pound box.usually spend $2-300 per trip and get quite the stares from the women watchin me buy all that shrimp!
it can be found cheaper,this stuff is fresh and crisp when defrosted.pay $75/1000 canadian crawlers and $45/bag 2.2lb massivore..dont feed smelt. i hate what it does to my water quality and clarity.

that is what i pay for smelt..... i get mine at an asian market/grocery store.
I also feed cichlid gold pellets and i get from an old member on here for like $28 for a couple of pounds.
 
ok i'm gonna sound like a dumba** here, BUT what is smelt!? another name for Tilapia? im wandering bc I can NEVER find it anywhere.....

I get 3lbs of tilapia fillets for 11bucks SO if I can find better I will go find better. has any1 ever used any of the other filets? like catfish or the "maui" not sure if i spelled that right? just curious

smelt is like anchovies sort of., it is a small fish similar to minnows.. Can only get it here at asian market.

Yikes! How many rays do you have? I have 13 rays and other fish on top of it and a 11 lb box of smelts last me a month. I also feed about 2 lbs of shrimp in the month. My rays are still breeding with this amount of food.
 
smelt is oiley and does jack up the water a bit but u just get so much bang for yiur buck and it seems healthy especially when there full of those yellow eggs i havbe to break them in half so they sink i prefer shrimp though because it doesnt dirty up the water as bad
