Can archer fish live in Freshwater forever or do they have to move up to brackish?

Really depends on which species you have. Mine have been in full fresh for years. If your archer needs more salt you'll know. It fungus out fast when its in need of salt.

they can be kept in either on you just have to make sure your waters clean. they have actually been bread in pure fresh water and adults caught in pure fresh... but a lil salt wont hurt fresh fish it actualy can prevent freshwater illnesses

Its not the case of that they can be kept in either, it depends on the species. If you're keeping Toxotes jaculatrix, its best to keep them in brackish water, as its more or less the environment you'f find them in the wild.

T. chatareus, however, is frequently found in fresh and brackish water, and that is the species that you're speaking about that has been bred in freshwater. Most of the other freshwater archer species are pretty rare.
