I have a bunch of chocolates, my favorite smaller cichlid by far. I have three pairs that breed often, think I have 18 of them, I recently lost 5 due to columnaris in the 220.14448888_10154588575827451_1621622592740171751_n.jpg 14591737_10154648328202451_3106246352578481172_n.jpg 14641985_10154683316297451_1643764113365757265_n.jpg 14716184_10154649052802451_8915694694262395047_n.jpg 14717055_10154681758497451_8503397178360832374_n.jpg C360_2016-11-02-00-00-58-037.jpg C360_2016-11-19-09-20-09-397.jpg C360_2016-11-22-00-59-47-780.jpg

Beautiful chocolates Jason they look great

I have 9 in the 265, the one pair run the tank but usually don't mess with anyone unless they invade their space I created for them which has a piece of slate on the bottom and a big piece of wood around them, but those loaches slip in and out and the plecos just don't care. I used to have two true parrots, but they were pretty big and the bull chocolate would always go after him and didn't want either to get hurt to traded the parrots for more chocolates. I will have to post some more photos of them later tonight.

The colorful one is the female, she is almost always brightly colored up so she takes some good photos.

So is there a clear way of sexing these guys Jason ?

I have heard of several ways but the best way is either to vent or toss a bunch in together and see what pairs up. I have heard about fins being longer on one than the other but my three pairs are all different, eye coloration is different and even the I guess you can say mini nuchal hump, the female has a big bulge between her eyes while the male doesn't. I don't think there is a 100% for sure ID by visual if you ask me, venting and letting them pair up is the best way that I'm aware of.

All your chocolates look great. I think they are my favorite cichlid, they have just a great temperament especially for a community tank. I'm not allowed to post links yet so I'll tell you how you can find mine on youtube if you type in "community tank choclate, oaxaca cichlid" it will be the first video you come across. If you stick around until the end of my stupid minute long video you get a nice shot of him.
