I've had Macaws, several of them...none anymore.

People tend to say Grey 's are smarter, but they're not , imo. Of course there are very smart grey's ( perhaps even the smartest known parrot, Alex, a grey ), but in general terms I would say that the amazon Ocrocephala species ( the yellow heads, with their subspecies yellow foreheads, yellow napes, yellow heads, etc ) are the smartest parrots.

why don't you have your macaws? I almost bought one... but then started getting more fish and tanks... ;)

Actually among parrots there are 3 groups that are really intelligent.

The African Greys - the thinkers

The Amazons - the chatters

The Large Macaws - the Escape Artists

The Greys generally are consider to be smarter - because they speak more clearly than Amazons,Macaws or Cockatoos. They also seem to have a better ability to learn the names, numbers & colors better than other types of Parrots. They are actually almost a smart as a small pre-school child, in learning ability.

Amazons are great at picking up sounds - singing, & talking. But tend to score worse than Grey's on the ability to learn names, colors or numbers. Still I would not call them smarter than Greys. If any thing I would say the Greys tend to barely edge the amazons out in raw intelligence

Generally speaking macaws often take a back seat to Greys & Amazons in the talking department. But large macaws have an almost uncanny ability to break out of cages - even so called "Macaw proof" cages. They can even learn to open cages by finding the weakest points in the cage - then manipulating the bars until they break, or in some cases they can learn how to open combination locks - no joke - I've actually seen a Blue & Gold do it.

This reason, my blue and gold escaped never to be seen again, and the NOISE, made me have to get rid of the Green Winged Chloropteras Macaws.

In terms of escape, I find that Cockatoos are still worse than Macaws.

As to be being "smart "and parrots, I have heard of Yellow Napes singing Opera, something I find a Grey will never be able to.

But again, if it is "talking ability" we want, nothing beats the Minnah.
