In theory they are as smart as 5 yr olds but those that keep inside as actual pets say much smarter .

The one's in my area arent particularly smart because they lack human interaction they are mostly outside birds who mimic dogs and scream at each other .
i agree.. just like a child with little teaching... they need to interact.. mine right now is learning to spell our last name...in essence his last name... haha... :D

I love African Greys! It is the only "big" bird I would get. We have a moluccan cockatoo at work. He is the store pet and has been there since he was 3 days old. He is now 17. He is noisy though and he can only say a handful of words.

Not sure if you covered this or not Liz, but I dont have time to go through all of these pages....Did you teach Mr. Cash all of the words he knows? Does he ever get moody or anything? Peaches (the moluccan) gets moody and if he doesnt want to do something, he will let you know!!

i really did not have to teach mr cash... he learned just from being around us... he not only knows words and the exact pronounciations... but he knows most of their meanings...and only says the words when nessasary..for instance if it is night he will say good night... and if he sees me putting on my makeup... he will say are you ready?? he is hardly ever moody.. and so far so good.. he will be 10 and they say they do change somewhat when older... he never yells.. and never is noisy.. he is always entertaining.. or quiet.. not much gray area... he observes and thinks when he is quiet... i have the other two birds.. and sadly no comparison to him... he is ultimate ...

Hey Liz I have heard from a few of my friends that greys are very much thinkers and like to just sit there and observe and not so much of a cuddler or like to get out and play. Does this apply to Mr. Cash and greys in general or are their birds just more laid back. I was jut wondering this b/c when I was searchin for a bird greys were one of my possibilities. I finally decided on a macaw because I heard they love to cuddle and play which is very true of Lucy. So I was just wondering what you had to say about this.

i would say that is pretty good description.. they are affectionate but not cuddlers... they are not into touchy feelie... but do love companionship and they do like to sit on your head or shoulder... they cannot dance ... they have no rythmn in movement.. they can hardly fly... remind me of an A10 wart hog..low flying.a and they crash alot.....haha... they do not like anything on their counter... where they hang out..will clean it off in a hurry..everything goes on the floor..flung off the side.. lol they waddle when they run...so funny.. they are fat stubby grays...with so much brain... it is mind boggling.. true thinkers... do not play with toys often unless it is brand new and interesting .. other wise they get bored with it..we almost got a mccaw instead of our gray... i love them too..

Since they get bored with toys so easily how do you keep them entertained and avoid bad behaviors because it sounds like they would be very prone to over preening, plucking and screaming. Because with Lucy I can just get her a new toy about once every3-4 weeks and give her stuff to shred and forage in.

this is the one thing that makes him really special to me.. he is very content to look out at the back of my head..over my shoulder and view the pc screen.. he never ever gets bored enough to pluck feathers.. and never ever ever screams.. and if he wants something he asks for it.. whether its an apple or cookie or cracker .. or a special nut .. i get it for him... sometimes i say it is not lunch time yet... and then i give it to him at lunch.. at dinner time he comes out.. has a few flights across the room... a little helping of a morsel of food from our dinner.. and lots of attention... where we talk to him... tell him what a great guy he is..let him see the dobie when she jumps up... then mr cash growls and barks.. he likes that action..haha.. i am very fortunate with him.. he is laid back and content.. and a thinker.. and gets more enjoyment out of singing then screaming.. where i cannot say the same for my cockatoo or conure.. they scream at times loudly... and you will hear mr cash politely tell them to shut up big mouths...

Wow they really do sound like a wonderful bird. And he sounds like he has the manners to be polite too. lol That is the only thing I have to complain about my girl is when she gets on one of her sreaming temper tantrrums it will kill your ears and drive you crazy:WHOA: haha But thankfully that doesn't happen too often.

my cockatoo only screams at night... for about 10 minutes..but those 10 minutes.... well you know..haha... i love them all... though..but Mr. Cash is truly wonderful.. and it would have been smart if i just had him... but once your in my home and with me... i accept the good and the bad .... so parting with them is not an option... your lucy is a sweet bird,... parrots are wild creatures.. so once in awhile we have to bear with it and let them blow off some steam... lol

He does know meanings and when to use them? By intelluct of 5 yr old. I meant they can figure out basic stuff .
I just thought they learned words and sentences but just spewed them out at random.

My neighbors bird calls me curses but no one else . Its an Amazon . It knows what its saying?
