The main point is that we humans are by far the most invasive species. Your example of the 6.9 BILLION people is ABSOLUTELY perfect. It could not possibly sell my point any better if I tried.
In 1976 we celebrated the bicentenial of the United States of America. I was young but remember a little "jingle" about the bicentenial: "Two-hundred million people, no two are quite the same". . . . . .
At this time the population of the USA was 200,000,000 and around 2.6 billion humans on earth! The extreme population explosion was seen as the most serious problem that the planet faced in the day! China (the worlds most populous) country even took extreme measure to reduce the overpopulation PROBLEM, which have only resulted in an imbalanced Male/ Female ration that no longer even leaves their 2+ billion a viable population!
Today in 2011 overpopulation is less than ZERO of an issue. I don't understand where the planet "found itself" so many additional resources to be able to support the now 7 BILLION humans today. It HAS NOT!
What has happened is that we accept that the ability to terriform other planets/ moons within our solor system to conditions which can support human life is still roughly a century away. Likewise the ability to traverse space at the velocity required to inhabit (ultimate invase species) planets outside of our solor system that have an existing atmosphere that can support human life is easily a century off.
Given that the human ancestors on earth first poped up around 2,000,000 years ago. The human population took almost 2,000,000 years to reach the 1 billion population mark in the early 20th century!
It took 2 million years for we humans to hit the 1 billion population mark. It has taken only a century since then for us to reach the 7 billion population mark.
This is what is known as exponential increase. In order to just attempt to place this into some kind of comprehensible perspective: If a meteorite were to strike earth tomorrow and wipe out half of the population of the planet, More humans will have died within seconds then EVERY SINGLE HUMAN BEING THAT HAS EVER EXISTED> LIVED AND DIED on this planet combined since the rise of humanity.
If you can not read between the lines, we have already gladly accepted that we WILL wipeout every species on this planet and send them ALL into extinction long before we would entertain the thought of population control and planetary resource management that would possibly allow for another species to peacefully coexist with us!
Nope, 7 billion humans would not fit into the small area of africa, nor would it be prudent to commit mass genocide, although that is what we are doing by proxy!
The second point is and should be even more important for us to understand. The human species exists for one reason and one reason only. INVASIVE SPECIES! We could not possibly have evolved without SUCCESSFULLY introducing invasive species to the new areas that we migrated.
It is generally viewed as (ALWAYS) a bad thing. The point is that the introduction of invasive species by human beings is NOT ALWAYS BAD. It is in fact GOOD in many instances and is the ONLY reason that ANY human is alive today to post in this forum.
No Invasive species = no humanity
