I had pot scrubbers in a HOB and they molded I personally would use lava rocks

they were partially out of water and not submerged so it probably wouldn't be a problem in a canister but I just don't trust them anymore
Ive been using them when my 180g was running but ive only tried pot scrubbers maybe 1 1/2 before my tank broke, we’ll see how they do with canister.
I’ve never use pot scrubbies but I’ve read a lot about them being used in a sump. The general consensus is that they are cheap, it works, and readily available. I think it should work in a canister since bio bacteria can grow on anything. I am not sure if it will clog up fast like a sponge. Personally I don’t like to overload my canisters since that can slow the flow down leading up clogging.
I think lava rocks is a better option but they do raise your ph which can be an issue if you keep fish sensitive to ph change.

Ph wont be an issue, ill be only keeping polys and odoe, ill be trading the roseline sharks for the odoe.
Another pot scrubber user here. I have them in my fx5, fx6, Rena xp3, and my aquaclear hobs. Can't beat $1 a pack.
Actually the 25lb bag of lava rock I got at Menards for $7 might..
Scrubbies are easier though. But I use both.
Also I had no ph increase from lava rock.
Pot Scrubbers are fine to use. I've ALSO used them in FX4/5/6 & Sunsun/Aquatop canisters as well.
I still have a Eheim 2262 NIB I haven't used yet(still haven't got that 300 I want..ughhh) that I intend to fill with pot scrubbers as it's waaaay to big to buy ceramics for.
I've NEVER had a problem with pot scrubbers at all. The perform great as the best "bang for the buck" bio-media available in my opinion, and many others you will find on the forums.....
