so i have a couple AC110's and here's what's stacked in them:

stock foam block, filter floss, pot scrubbies

question is, are those scrubbies a good source for culturing beneficial bacteria?

asking b/c i'm debating on getting an emperor 404 w/ the biowheels, and i know those bio wheels are good when it comes to bio filtration.

Scrubbies are good for sumps, but when it comes to canisters and HOBs, it's best to stick with ceramics.
I prefer Marineland, so good choice. Theres alot of AC110 maniacs on here and those aren't bad. I'm just a one brand HOB kinda guy I guess.
Though, with your AC110's theres a good amount of space in them for you to put a sac of cerammics in there.

I wonder what the Bio Calculation is on the Emporer 404 wheels compared to one sac of your average AC ceramics?
That's a good Q.

thanks Cam.. yea i was reading up on it and felt as tho the scrubbies are pretty useless right now. although in my other ac, i have the ceramic biomax.

i too like to have one set of HOB's in one tank, it just looks better, but i'm thinking to switching over to emperors for the bio.

Then again, i only have one fish in a 90 gallon so who knows :nilly:

I don't have scrubbies in my HOBs, but my 304 is packed with them, mostly because they are nice and cheap. I think I fit 18 in there. They seem to work pretty well. I would also go ahead and use them anywhere I could fit one in an HOB. With emporer 400s, you could fit 2 or 3 in each biowheel tray by putting them in that extra media tray then putting one in front of it. My 400 is filled to the brim with filter foam for that extra filtering power.

btw AC > bioFail in every way ;)

thats what i was afraid of.... i've always used ac110's but now i might
be thinking of giving the emperors a shot.

i'm wondering if i can somehow insert the biowheel into the ac110 and get the best of both worlds?

I love my emperors. I have an AC70 on my 55 with a GT, a devil and a buttikoferi in it (before I get flamed none of them are over 4") and all it has in it are scrubbies, waters clear and perfect.

i have scrubbies in my fx5 and xp3, but with ac's i think i will stick to biomax because there is no way for me to keep them down from the water flow.

When bitteraspects is talking about the "biofail" he is referring to the biowheel filters:ROFL: It would take a garbage bag of scrubbies to equal a liter of biomax in surface area. So your best bet is to go with biomax in your AC110. I have several well stocked tanks that are filtered with just a single AC110, no bio filtration problems whatsoever.
