I recall back when these hit our community, some people were saying that you had to unravel them for them to do any good. Now every picture I see with them in use, they are as they come, still rolled up.

I'm making a Rubbermaid drawer style wet/dry and would like to know the most efficient way to set it up.

Thanks,
JoelR

Leave them together. Surface area is surface area. I think you would be wasting a lot of time.

Agreed, the only benefit I can see to unraveling them is you can probably pack the media in a little tighter, so you would be able to use more of them gaining some surface area, wheather you think it's worth the time and effort for probably 10 or so additional scrubbies is entirely up to you. Me, I left mine intact and filled the empty spaces with bio-max cylinders

I plan on leaving mine together. However, I'm investigating buying the nylon on spools. I anticipate being able to pack the media in tighter. I'm not sure if that's a good thing or bad thing.

Thanks guys. I'll leave them as they are.

So is the claim still that the pot scrubbies have more surface area than Bio balls? I have the large drawer and part of another one filled with Bio Balls. Should I leave them or replace them with more scrubbies?

I'll post some pics as soon as I figure out why it's not letting me download any more pics. This thing has turned out nice!!! What I did was replaced my regular Wet/Dry. I was looking into just raising my tower side and adding more media but finding the right sized bin to set in the opening just wasn't working out. I can't believe what a $$$ saver this has been, compared to a store bought Wet/Dry and it's sooooooo much bigger.

Thanks again for all your help.
Joel

Scrubbies have more surface area, yes.
If you want to use up all of the space, just stuff some bioballs in between the scrubbies. This is what I did for my 55 gallon.
Or nylon spools in between.

Nice!!! That is packed full. Here's a question, though. Do you put some type of mechanical filter on top of your drip plate? Is there a prefilter feeding the sump? I'm guessing if not it would get very dirty.

Thanks,

Steve.

I fill the tray with filter pad. You can sorta see it in the pic.

I also have a finer filter foam just before the pump to take out the smaller waste.
