Pot scrubbies, Unravel or leave together?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I say leave them as is. Pack them too tight and water can't get between the layers and will channel around the media, decreasing the usable surface area. Even though bioballs may have a smaller surface area, they allow "dripping" which leaves air space for aerobic bacteria. Everything has its pro's/con's.

I'm investigating buying the nylon on spools
Ask a tackle shop to save the line for you when they re-spool reels. I used about 5 billzillion yards, or 50 gallons of monofilament in my pond TT.

That's another great idea. Not many around here, but it's another source of media.

Thanks,

Steve.

Just buy the material at a craft store and then pack it however you want, you could just bunch it up, put a few knots in it or wrap it around something but its pretty cheap at most craft stores!!!

Nice sump/filter Camshaft. I was wondering, if after a while, do you have to replace the bio-balls or pot scrubbies? I know that in saltwater setups bio-balls are not encouraged because over time they become nitrate "factories" and raise nitrates of the chart, which in saltwater setups is really bad for invertabrates and promotes algae growth. Camshaft, maybe you can relate to this since it seems like you know what you are doing.

If your set on nylon line, we used to use nylon netting (for fruit trees) just bunch it up in the sump, but scrubbies mixed with other media to take up space are so much easier to handle (put them in large knit nylon bags for removal and cleaning).
