Why do most members here choose pot scrubbies for their DIY filters/sump? What are the advantages over ceramic rings & bioballs?

They're CHEAP!

They also have a tremendous amount of surface area for the beneficial bacteria to live on. They're the best bang for the buck.

Pot Scrubbies have a larger surface area per sq. inch and are less expensive

For people with MONSTER sumps. It costs far too much for other media. Unless you are loaded. PLus the surface area is up there.

I go with pot scrubbies. I have over 200 scrubbies packed into my biggest sump. I also have other media, but the bulk of it is scrubbies.

1) cheaper than any other media

2) almost 4x more surface area than regular bio balls see here

So basically with scrubbies, there's no need for other media?

Well, it depends on the application. You'll always have to have to have another sort of mechanical filtration though.

Its obvious that they're cheaper, but they don't ACTUALLY have a larger surface area than aquarium medias do they? Bioballs I can see, but ceramic rings? ehfisubstrat? I don't buy it...
Still obviously the best way to go for a large sump as far as affordability goes, as its obvious that they do make good filter media
