Its obvious that they're cheaper, but they don't ACTUALLY have a larger surface area than aquarium medias do they? Bioballs I can see, but ceramic rings? ehfisubstrat? I don't buy it...
Still obviously the best way to go for a large sump as far as affordability goes, as its obvious that they do make good filter media
They actually are better than ceramic rings and such simply because they don't clog as fast... there are a million reasons why Scrubbies are sold out in every Dollar Store in North America....MFK is the main one though :D

Has anyone mentioned that they are CHEAP???

youre really comparing apples to oranges here. why? because they are used in two very different applications. scrubbies are used out of water in a sump where water is trickled over them. ceramic media is used submerged in canister filters

It's $15.48 from the site. It's only $12. if you buy it from the store (Halls). Go figure.

That's assuming you can find them in the store or in a dollar store. I've never been able to get the 10/$1 deal anywhere I've looked. Anytime I see a dollar store I stop and look. The availability has been extremely slim, too. That's why I finally decided to order them. The store is right down the street from work. Plus I got a 10% discount, so it'll be the cheapest I've ever gotten them.
