Hello everyone,

I have discus in with my retic.
My discus importer suggested the use of potassium permanganate to treat external parasites.
I've looked thru the stickies and didn't see anything related to potassium permanganate's effects on rays.
I would greatly appreciate any and all feedback / experiences.

So have you seen external parasites? I have not used that. I used a product called anchors away for some fish lice I.had.on imported rays

Nothing on the ray. This medication is intended to get the discus eating more aggressively.
My question is "Is this medication Ray Safe"?

Keep in mind, the medication will be very diluted.

I'm just trying to find out if anyone has had any experience.

to be honest most people using potassium permanganate are in aquaculture. its one of the very few fda approved drugs to treat aquaculture fish for human consumption with.

You have to remove anything from the system you want to stay alive . It will sterilize your system. Yes it will kill everything but so does bleach . 100% youl kill discus and a retic . Just a tad bit of chlorine is enough to kill rays and discus. I don't see the benefit of treating a healthy tank .

Discus are fine with Pot.P when it is used correctly, but as Calgary points out: you will sterilize ( oxidize) everything else, especially your filtration bacteria. It is not very effective Vs parasites either.....what are you trying to treat exactly?
I have never used it with rays. I would not risk it.
IDBT !!!

I have only used that with an outbreak of Costia in Discuis ( at the time it was called the discus plague in here ),.

It was effective. But everything , good and bad, gets killed. Discus survive the attack but you have to cycle from scratch..

water stays red wine tinted for hours. do not get scared.

Know nothing about it with Rays....

Last week i lost my 2 tiger oscars for treating fish lice with potassium permanganate... Those fish are very friendly to me, now i feel very bad for that... Becareful or dont use that... Medicines avail for treating parasites...

I used PP to treat external fungi from open sores on all fish even rays.. I do this as preventative measure against secondary infection. Think of it as wound ointment you put on an open cuts to prevent anything else from entering.

I do direct treatment, I usually make a thick paste of powder PP and a few drops of water. Take the fish out of water, apply the paste using q-tips on the open sore. Avoid gills at all cost.. when I am done, I "rinsed" the fish in a spearate container containing original tank water for a few seconds and I put the fish back in the tank.

I have done this for years with great success....

great idea... i do the same with mercurochrome and it also works...
