Potential bichir food

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I’ve fed mine small frogs and baby frogs, i collect live frogs snails worms and bugs around our lake to feed my cichlids and the Oscar. What I do is I keep the frogs and snails in a holding tank treat it for a couple weeks then drop them in for the fish, I only do this occasionally as treat during summertime.

Hi everyone, I am trying to create a list of foods for my future bichirs. Ever since I lost my big senegal, I have been planning to grow out another big one, maybe even bigger than the old one was. Here is the list so far:
-Hikari cichlid gold/carnivore pellets
-fresh shrimp/shrimp pellets/krill
-bloodworms
-dried fish (anchovies)
-tilapia/sutchi fillets
- snakehead fry(quarantined)
- guppies, mollies, shrimp (self bred)
- freeze-dried/live crickets, cockroaches and superworms
- maybe a little spirulina pellets
-scallops
-cockles, mussels

A VERY varied diet. Any opinions and tips are appreciated!
I like the variation in your list. Personally, I would stick to a primary routine of a quality pellet or two and tilapia, and then supplement with other foods. Some members on the site like to feed catfish before a water change to help prevent bloat.

I would avoid bloodworms as they do not have any nutritional value. Black worms or redwrigglers would be better imo.
Another thing to note is if you are feeding smaller live fish, make sure they are quarantined as you noted. Keep in mind that live fish MIGHT increase the prey drive and aggression in your polys.

Perhaps, someone else can comment on the shrimp, scallops, cockles, and mussels, as I do not know much about feeding those foods.

@RD has some really great threads about the nutrition of fish foods. Would strongly suggest looking into those.
