Sorry about your loss.....but it indeed is strange that u lost the parrots only to the power outage....could there be another reason for the loss other than just the power outage?

Well the cr_p thing about living in South Africa is that the demand for electricity is higher than the supply, so what our government has been doing is systematically shutting off the power in different areas in order to cope with the demand in power . As soon as the use of power goes down to acceptable levels, they turn it back on. This has been going on for a week now and it affects the filtration, water temp and oxygen levels. It happens every day - the power goes out for a few hours then comes back on. This happening repeatedly to your fish can't be good can it? Every time the power goes out, I want to freak. My fish got ich because of this, but luckily I made arrangements (and spent some extra cash) and my darlings are fine. At least the power situation is back to normal now and I hope it stays that way.

Does anyone have some tips on how to cope with power outtages like this and what stuff you can buy to help? :nilly: Please let us know coz this is definitely going to happen again.

Hello, Bee

Yeah, these power failures have been cr*p. I heard that the reason for these failures was that they were doing maintenance on the power grid and had shut down some power stations. The cold temperatures of last week were unexpected, so demand went up, and supply was running short because of the maintenance. Something like that.

Yeah, it was a good result in the World Cup on Saturday :headbang2

I hope you will be rooting for the Lions in the Currie Cup final this coming Saturday, given that the Blue Bulls are no longer in the competition :)

Cheers.

Strange one that. My sister in law turned my tank off one night(by accident) the tank was without power for about 12-14 hours and with no i'll effects.

I agree to lose fish in few hours isnt right either grossly overstocked or tank in dire need of water change.
I lost electricity when I lived in NY for 3 days 2 summers ago and didnt lose a single fish (Marine fish)
I have a few tanks here in my patio (Miami) no electricity but they get a water change every other day or so and all doing very well .
Power outage for a day or 2 shouldnt kill anything

I would keep either no substrate or thin layer. Small water changes every few days instead of one a week siphoning the bottom clean .
I have tanks in my patio with no filtration just driftwood but I do have rainwater barrels in my yard and can change whatever water I want ESP since its been pouring lately

Hello, Onion1 and DasArab

When the power was out, I lost only the Parrots - the other fish survived ok. When you had a power failure, were there Parrots in your tank and did they survive alright? I am puzzled that only one type of fish died in my tank. I was thinking that maybe the Parrots somehow need more O2 than other fish? I dunno.

Cheers.

Yep it was a 46g with 2 adult bp's in it.
