In my back yard, we got a river. there were about 25 -30 bullheads in it, and every day we would feed the trout and bullheads bread, algae tabs, wardley koi food, and i'd throw in tubifex. Your right, bread is not a great staple food, has little nutrition, but the fish devoured it readily and couldnt get enough. bread should only be a treat, if fed at all. esp. in your home aquarium, where your not feeding 30 hungry cats and a few trout.
