well i have 2 power filter units i am looking at getting. i need your guys opinion on them. the first one is a emporer 400 and the second one is a penguin 350. i know the emporer is more money but do i need to spend the extra. i know the it is the better. the unit will be in a 55 gallon tank replacing a aqueon 55 gallon filter. i also have a 80 gallon sponge filter. please help and give me some ideas. i do not want a aqua clear filter either

hey i have the penguin 350 on my 55 gal and it works alright... honestly if i were you i would get and eheim pro II 2028, i have two running on my 84 gal and it is crystal clear :D if you decide to get one, petsmart.com has a good kit for only 264.00. it comes with lots of media and a really good intake and spray bar.

I've had a pair of Emp400's on my 55gal for 2yrs now
and they work very well,..i have no complaints aside
from the need to re-prime after doing waterchanges.
I think that is likely common w/ hob's though,..I've
heard "rumor" the Penquin filter can become noisy in
time,..cannot confirm this however,..just my 2cents,..

the emp's are better than the penguins, but both are good.

advantages the emps have over penguins are-
more gph
much larger bio-wheels and filterpads
spraybar for the bio-wheels
emp's come with media baskets for extra media

Yep, both are good for HOB filters and will both be workhorses for a LONG time.

well i talked to the guy from my local fish store and he said that the pengiun is the way to go. he has no compants over them. he said with the emperor it does not have a very good stablizer in it to make in lvl and he also some that there is a extra pump in there that goes bad alot

well i went looking around tonight at fish stores and i looked at the emperor and penguin out of the box. the emperor was alot bigger and they both look exzactly the same. they both have the samle leveling supports on them. i think i am just going to get the emperor becauase it seems like everybody has them and they have been out for a while. does anybody know where i can get a new one for under 43 bucks. also there is alot of people using canaster filters. whats the goods about them and whats the bad. are they easy to take care of.

You can usually find great deals on Emperors at www.petsolutions.com or www.drsfosterandsmith.com ..

As far as canisters go, yes, they are also great filters with more room for mechanical filtration and biological filter media for that matter. One of the biggest pros about canisters over a hang on back like an Emperor or Penguin is that they are almost always quieter if you have your tank in a bedroom/office, etc. You will get less evaporation in your tank with a canister as well since there's less water-air contact. Maintenance wise, I'd say the HOB types are probably easier to maintain since you rarely have to take them off the tank but you'll find yourself messing with canister less often.

well if i get a canasiter filter it would be the one that stays on the ground and i could run it about 5 feet away to another room so nobody can see it
