As far as canisters go, yes, they are also great filters with more room for mechanical filtration and biological filter media for that matter. One of the biggest pros about canisters over a hang on back like an Emperor or Penguin is that they are almost always quieter if you have your tank in a bedroom/office, etc. You will get less evaporation in your tank with a canister as well since there's less water-air contact. Maintenance wise, I'd say the HOB types are probably easier to maintain since you rarely have to take them off the tank but you'll find yourself messing with canister less often.

exactly, go on petsmart.com if you want a canister filter, they have lots of kits and stuff. i bought an eheim pro II with all the media and an upgraded intake and spray bar.
