Hello, just wondering what will happend if there is a power outage and there are no water movement in a tank. The tank is 8x2x2 well covered with 14 5-10" frontosa, 1 22" black arow, 2 4" NTT, 1 8" cat fish. There will be 4" of air space at the surface when the power is out. My question is how many hours will the fishes have before they ran out of oxygen? thanks.

You must buy a battery powered air pump and change the water reguarly and keep the filter media wet. The fish will probably die if you are not there

WC is done on a 25% weekly basic. there are 2 40gal wet/dry with a iwaki md 40. about 20gal of bio balls. 2 fluval 405 for water polishing and top surface water movement. in general the fishes are healthy but my concern is when i'm out of town for days or week. HOW MANY HOURS WILL THE FISHES HAVE BEFORE THEY RAN OUT OF OXYGEN? Hopefully someone with big tank could chim in.

It all depends.

After 7 hours, I would be freaking out. You've got one full ass tank. Have a backup plan.
I've seen fish die in a few hours and fish die in a day.

A battery pump only costs around $14 (I'de put 3 on yours). There are ones for sale that come on when power goes out.

Caps lock isn't necessary. Try taking some advice on here.

air pump is mainly for decoration in my case so i choose not to used it beside it scared my arow keeping it to the other side of the tank that's why i took it out in the first place. We do have a coupe power outage here and there but only 1/2 to 2 hours most. I can't remove the top cover because i lost an 12 jardini not long ago.

1/2 to 2 hours could be ok, but best not to risk it.

The air pump would only turn on when the power goes out. If I had to chooses between a shy aro and a dead aro, I would go with the shy aro and get a pump. No need to take off cover

back in 2005 we had the great north american power outage and I had no power for 13 hours.

had heavily stocked tanks with large barbs, silver dollars etc.

had no issues, not even a post ammonia spike or anything. however, I had just done water changes the day before.

the large barbs were, however, breathing pretty heavily (almost gasping) by the end.

I went out the next day and bought a few battery powered airpumps.

I have yet to have to use them, but they are there in case.

at the time however, I worked at the LFS who didn't have power for 22 hours. mine came back early.

we lost one of our big sharks (a 5 foot lemon shark) because the generator we had was out for repair. figures the power outage would happen then.....

but we had ammonia spikes in many of our 'pods' of tanks.

so, it can definatley be an issue.

I had a 5 day power outage here a few years ago. I didn't lose any fish in either my 125 or my 65 tanks. I did stir up the surface twice a day pretty good to try and get some oxygen into the tank. Honestly I was more concerned about the temp in the tanks.

Was that when you had those massive lemon fins in your pics? Barbs are pretty o2 needy aren't they, yet however very hardy in general would you say?
