Power Outage :-(

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Put it in some panty hose and drop them in the tank. Go to the store and get the battery powered bubbles, and put it under the biofilter. This will get some water movement and save you bacteria.

Thats why I bought a generator. $1000, but will run my fridge, a/c, tv,oven, lights, computer, and atleast one filter on both of my tanks and my pond. After all the hurricanes we had in florida a couple years ago I deemed it a necessity especially with all my fish. You can get a decent sized used one from a pawn shop that will run your tanks, tv and maybe a/c for a couple hundred.

Its alot of work, but you can also use a big cup or bucket and scoop water out of the tank and pour it back in repeatidly from a height so it splashes and makes turbulence, but I think I would go to walmart and buy a battery aerator in the fishing section for a couple bucks. They also have aeration blocks that you just drop into the water and as it dissolves like a feeder block it releases oxygen. I have never used them in a tank but they work with bait.

That wind storm sucked! We had 61 mph gusts at one point, but I don't know what the high for the night was. The winds were strong enough to rip a 4" diameter limb off of the aspen tree in front of my house.

Living in Mobile, AL we lose power due to storms of all types and the Hurricanes can really sock it to ya... Personal experience!
H. Ivan caught me unprepared and I lost many fish I was fond of, including my first Oscar :irked:
Tore up my property and damaged my roof.
I learned from that...
H. Katrina, I was prepared for that wench:headbang2

She really tore up my property and dang near took my roof OFF!
But all my fish came thru, no losses, and my second Oscar is fat and happy to this day ;)

I posted a thread pertaining to my experiences and what I did differently, Hurricane Katrina, battery powered air pumps save the day.

I drew up a article dealing with power outtages to try and help others.
'Prepping for and Surviving power outtages'

Maybe they can help you at this late point...

Great post Chile! Very informative. You should post that on here.

My power was out for over 9 hours one Sat. back in the summer. I really don't know why. The skies were clear, the power company never gave a reason. Most of my tanks have sumps, so the bio media was underwater during the outage, but the battery powered pumps worked very well in the smaller tanks. Thankful to say I didn't lose any fish, but when our new house is complete, it will have it's own backup generator. Well worth the extra money IMO. Hey Chile, when are you going to get some real monster fish to go with "them little ole oscars" ? :j/k:

This summer We blacked out for 25 hrs straight:( ..........started at 8 pm (stores closed)..........first thing in the morning and after hrs of dumping buckets onto the surface of my tanks and stressing to the point of exhaustion I bought battery powered air pumps:headbang2 ...........I put 1 in each of my tanks and went boogie boarding down at the jersey shore (nothing else i could do not to mention storm sized waves....haha!!).........well not a single fish died from that.............so I'll say they will survive at least a full day............but pls do not feed at all......:)

From now on I will always have the battery powered pumps as well as a nice supply of batteries on hand...........I live in an area that gets hit hard in the windy summer months!!!
