Power outages: how long before beneficial bacteria die?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i'm just curious about this. how long before they 'starve to death'?

Where is it located is it in your Sump,Canister, or HOB filter. If in any of these you could place the bio media in the main aquarium add a battery operated air pump with a air stone or manually pour water into HOB filter or Sump if possible , as long as there is fish in the aquarium your bacteria will survive.

If the filter is in the tank it will be fine, as the temp decreases they dont divide as fast. If its external then around 40 hours before you get any die off, even then it isnt much to start with.

Depends on your fish etc, but personally i use an inveter and leisure battery for Discus tanks etc. Although this year i got so sick of power outs we got a generator.

The bacteria split every 30=32 hours at aquarium temps, they are slow growing, so a couple of hours wont hurt them. Its a fallacy that they form cysts etc however.

thank you a lot dr. jason bell

Somewhere i have a table of division times and other info, i havnt seen it for ages. If i find it i will post here for you.

This paper is a bit out of date, its from 2010 and some of the information has now been updated, i am posting it because it still contains alot of good information.

Not exactly on topic but it gives alot of info on filter bacteria. If mods feel its way off topic then remove.

Ok i keep forgetting we cant post pdf;s!! Anyone object if i post on Utah and link it here?

https://www.I Will Not Spam on MFK.us/threads/filtration-info.440/

remove the link if its not allowed, basically it gives a good run down of bacterial species in closed system filters

thank you very much! i downloaded it and i'll read it later after my exams. i'm very much interested in learning more about bacteria in our media. is the table of division times included here also?

Not sure! It isnt the pdf i was thinking of, but it may have the info in.

The problem i have with papers is the database system we use at work. Its really old and papers are referenced not by title but by DOXI number or Author, its ideal for how we use it at work but for quickly searching on a topic it dosnt work well.

I am slowly going through some 2000 papers i have on my pc, i will try and sort them into a database with a search by topic. I have a good idea who the author :D so it shouldnt take long.

If you like microbiology information on filters i will see what i can get for you, i cant post most of them because of the copy right issue, but i can pm you some under the science and research share scheme.
