Power outages: how long before beneficial bacteria die?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
There you go!! the next paper i opened gave me the starting point lol. Here is a screen shot of one section, it references the paper that look into division times, i wont waste time looking on my pc for it. I will log in to the uni server and down load the paper. Note the comment in the screen shot on bacterial cultures you buy ;).

Give me a day or two and i will get you some papers sorted, i will have to put them on the server or something and pm you the links, let me know when you have them so i can delete the links.

thank you dr. jason! i really really appreciate it! i hope it wont be much of a trouble to get those papers sorted. and yes i'm interested in learning more about microbiology in the media we use in our filters. it might also help in the future with my aquaculture class when i take it(vetmed student ).

when i started the hobby of fish-keeping, i was only interested in growing my fish but once i started learning more about filters and media, i also became interested in taking care of the beneficial bacteria in my media :)

If the filter is in the tank it will be fine, as the temp decreases they dont divide as fast. If its external then around 40 hours before you get any die off, even then it isnt much to start with.

Depends on your fish etc, but personally i use an inveter and leisure battery for Discus tanks etc. Although this year i got so sick of power outs we got a generator.

The bacteria split every 30=32 hours at aquarium temps, they are slow growing, so a couple of hours wont hurt them. Its a fallacy that they form cysts etc however.
So you mean to tell me that after three days of having water in a tank it's not cycled?
Heresy!

I am in on Friday this week (office), when i get a couple of mins i will dig out some filtration papers for you. PM me your email and i will email you the pdfs.

LMAO sorry i was SOOOOoooo slow there. No i wouldnt dream of suggesting a cycle took three days!! 20 mins at most if you pour the water slowly, and 11 mins if you pour it quickly!

No idea why people think it takes as long as 24 hours :D:D:D

I forgot to turn my 2 fx6 on after a water change 2 Saturdays ago, I realised on the following Wednesday!!! The tank got a little cloudy but coincidentally added the declorinator late so assumed i was having a mini cycle. That and The fact I had plugged in the power head, lights, heaters ect distracted from the problem issue....!
Well after 4 days I plugged in the filters and by Friday morning it was crystal clear again, didn't lose any fish, they are all robust cichlids, cats and larger barbs tho.

On well established filters i have never had a problem on long shut offs. BUT bacteria are not the only microbes in the equation.

I think the best advice without going really deep into it is, if you have a well established filter then dont worry, alot of filters are full of organics, so when switched off they are still feeding as the organics break down.

Ok emailed you some papers to get on with, i will look some more out, its a bit of an eye opener when you realize the nitrogen cycle isnt as simplistic as normally described.

One of the papers i have sent with the list of bacteria responsible, is now out of date a bit, i think around another 26 species have since been added!
