Are they buying oscars from a cooling pond?

Have you always been so optimistic???
Obviously you have never been to the west coast and seen just how many huge privately owned tanks there are.
LOL that's a good pointModest_Man;3230519; said:If they glow I'll take 6.

I lived in Hawaii where we had all sorts of invasives. Know how many I shipped off? One box. Of 1-2" fish. Shipping rates are a huge turn off for large fish, as is their poor acclimatization to captivity after living in "the wild".
It's a pipe dream to think you can make any sort of profit off these fish. I know from experience.

jbru70;3230613; said:LMAO I didnt say I was going to start a fish business.
Didnt say I was gonna mail a fish anywhere.
If there are huge fish in these ponds there are sure to be few offspring.
My point was....... if you started out with zero money, went out to one of these ponds to enjoy the sunshine. Managed to catch a few of these fish, which might not be easy. You could perhaps sell enough fish to support your own fish tanks. Which would leave money otherwise spent on your hobby in your pocket.
But you would have to leave your parents basement, borrow moms minivan, and rob a sporting goods store for a fish trap on the way to the pond to do that.
Try This!!!!!! Just for giggles post a for sale ad on craigslist for any large ca\sa of your choice. Price it at...........lets say $10.
Count the replies to your ad. Then multiply those replies by $10.
jgentry;3230647; said:If you want to try to catch fish and sell them, buy all means have at it. The people that have replied to your money maker claims are adults who have been part of this hobby for a while. During that time I can promise you we have all had to find homes for adult fish that did not work out. It is not easy. I'm also not going to waste peoples time by creating false craigslist adds. Just remember that once you collect these fish they are your responsibility to give them proper care and housing until you can sell/give them away. No releasing them back! So you had better have several large holding tanks for these fish to aclimate them and get them in selling shape. By the time you do all this and spend time and money collecting them I would suggest more then $10 each or you won't even break even.
jbru70;3230810; said:Are you assuming that I havent been a part of this hobby for quite some time. Are you assuming that I have never sold a fish.
You claim you have sold more fish than I. But thats impossible, you said it yourself. You cant even give em away........lol. Nobody wants em.
Rubbish
My wife and I have kept fish, reptiles, birds, dogs, cats, and horses and cattle for 22 years. No Breaks. Since I was 18 yrs old. No Breaks. Weekly water changes, cage cleaning, vet bills, food, supplies, medicines, aquariums, ponds, equipment, fuel for 22 yrs.
No Breaks Period.
And im learning new things about the afore mentioned creatures everyday.
So dont act like ur some sort of expert. Dont assume.
Plan a little better,do some more research and your fish will "work out".
I dont really understand how an adult fish doesnt "work out".
Dont blame your fish.
You didnt "work out".
You failed them and then had to seek out someone who could care for the fish.
jgentry;3230840; said:You know absolutely zero about CA/SA cichlids if you think they all work out because you planned for them or read about them. No amount of planning can make everything work with them. One person can have complete success with a stock list. The next person can have the exact same fish in with the exact same setup and have it not work. Planning and understanding the fish before you buy it is a key start. From there it is very hit and miss as everyone that keeps aggressive large CA/SA cichlids will tell you.
You are the one assuming things. I said that there are tons of people that have fish and fry that cannot give them away and that adult large cichlids are hard to get rid of. I have lots of fry right now. Some of them will be hard to get rid of, some will not. I don't care what you have kept or when or how long, nor do I care about your gas or vet bills. I'm not going to get into what I have done or kept or what my wife and I do. You are the one claiming you can easily sell monster fish and that this is going to make you money.
Like I said, if you want to go collect the fish then go do it. Just do it in the right way and have proper housing for them before you do.
