Powerhead and Pump Choices...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Somebody wanna chime in real quick before I order the wrong thing? :)

Based on my picture, what do you think would be the best choice for my 2 koralia evos:

-1400gph
-1050gph
-750gph

I would no doubt go for the 14s but i don't want to have so much current that my fish wont be able to swim. Thanks for the tips.

Thanks. That was my first choice. They have a relatively wide stream of water output too, right?
I have two older Koralia's #4 (1200 or 1400 I can't remember) on my 220 and they keep the sand clear. I use the smaller models on my 125, #2. I have a #1 that takes care of a 55g with no problems.

Placement is key. I've had problems putting them next to the overflows. Their pull is stronger then the overflow so they tend to pull the crude away from the overflow and back into the water column. My tank has corner overflows, I've found the best placement is the worst spot for viewing, in the front corners mid way down. I've never tried in the back, that may work as long as you are at least a 24" from the overflows (closer would be ok on smaller models). It may create strange patterns in the the current which you fish may not like.

I wouldn't get 1400's on a 125 unless you have river fish that like a strong current. It's a wide gentle stream but it's significant. I'd get two 750gph or one 1050 or 1400. I don't know what fish your are keeping or how your sump is plumbed but a mag 9.5 or 12 would do. an 18 would be overkill. You'd probably have to throttle it back, the overflows might not be able to keep up.
