Hey all. I am in the market for a powerhead for my 75 gallon freshwater tank that is stocked with Denison Barbs, Rainbowfish, a severum, and some corys. The powerhead is mainly to benefit my Denisons and rainbowfish as ive read they like a little/mild current. I keep reading conflicting info on GPH for my needs and havent gotten any responses in other forums. I will attach a pic of my tank for reference. Help me choose!

How much do you want to pay and how much current do you want? I have a Jebao RW8 in my 115 gallon 4 foot tank. That's about 2000 gallons per hour, gives a nice gentle current through the tank. Flow and direction is widely adjustable.

You could probably do that or an Rw4 if you like a more stagnant tank like most people.

Thanks for the reply! I want a decent current but dont want to blow my jungle val out of place or be too much for my severum. Ive read conflicting info on if Rainbows like current or not. So I guess im looking for something fairly small. I had someone suggest a 240gp one. Seems very light. And as far as proce wise, im really not looking to spend more than $30. Cheap cheap, I know lol

Severums handle current just fine.

Oh, and RW4 is only about $60, very wide current rather than narrow like you'll get with most cheap powerheads, lower power usage, much more variable flow most cheap powerheads just have a valve choking off the flow rather than slowing the impeller/propeller. Also can be used as a wavemaker.

Whats the difference between a wavemaker and powerhead? Sorry for stupid questions lol.

A powerhead has continuous laminar flow, a wave maker is usually set to intermittent flows that produce ebb and flow wave action.
I use a fairly heavy flow in my tanks, and beyond the current loving fish, the val seems to grow very well under high flow conditions.

Find under the high flow, the growth is such that I try 2 -3" off per week.

Awesome! Is trimming val advisable? Mine grows up and down the front of my tank and I love the look without it being trimmed. My sev handles that when she needs to lol

The jebao RW range of powerheads seem pretty good. I've got the RW20 in a 180 and i have to have it on its lowest setting. It cant half shift water. It'll be perfect for when i get a bigger tank. They have night mode, feed mode, variable speed and you can wirelessly link them to another powerhead to give you wave options.

Jeeze they sound really nice. Ill have to look into them. I was hoping id be able to get the same somewhere around her at a pet shop so i could pick it up tonight
