Rift lakes makes me. Would a powerhead be a good idea? i have a fluval running full power putting some current out, but would a powerhead be a bad idea. Anyone done this and do your fish like it?

Many people say no because there isnt much current in the rift lakes.Of Malawi,Tanganyika, and Victoria I would say victoria is the only one whos water movement is enough to call a real "current",although malawi does get pretty turbulent during storms.Tanginyika is very calm almost all year round.

The thing is I have my tank being filtered at about 16X an hour and that makes some fair current but they dont mind.

My theory for this is that maybe there isnt much current in the lakes but theres also a whole lot more space,so they can swim around and stay fit.It would make sense to me to make up for the lack of space by providing them with a current they can swim against.

hope theres an answer to your question in there somwhere....however vague,LOL

I had a powerhead for awhile in my 120... the fish were various size 2-5 inches... most of the fish stayed out of the current and hid... now without it they swim all over the tank... ime (in my experience)

what i did was with my rock set up i placed a powerhead behind a rock and then placed some around it so that there isnt a direct stream if you catch what im sayin

i think i found an answer i was looking for. Im guessing im not going to get one. I belive the fluval is enough current when i first put it in there they hid most of the time. Now that they finally got adjusted to that i dont think they need anymore.

but thanks

i use 2 6080 tunze streams (powerful powerheads used by saltwater reefers) in my 180g. I have them on an auto-timer and they come on 4x daily for 15 minutes each time.

the current they provide gently sweeps all the fish gunk to my 2217 eheim filter intakes located at either end of my tank.

my mobas love the current....some swim in it and others take cover in my holey rock caves.

What size tank? Larger tanks will definately benefit from the extra water circulation that powerheads can provide.
