ohio
so like 2.5 million in ohio, and many many many more all over the US, my power is out, and could be out 5-7 more days ...

so all LFS were sold out of battery pumps of course, but i found one at a bait shop :)

i am plugging it in now, and my fish were starting to get stressed and breathing hard... hopefully they will start to look better

so my question is what do i do now??
they said it will last up to 33 hours, and we have more batteries and all that ...
what about my heaters? my coldwater tanks without heaters are about 72 degrees normally, but i dont know what will happen now that there is no AC or heat in my apartment....

but should i do water changes?

anything else i should know about power outtages?

(tank is 180g with large SA stuff in it (aros, p.bass, big cats, ck....))

You too? My dad called me this morning and told me the power is out at my house. The only problem is I'm not there. I'm at school about an hour away, so I had him get me a couple bait bucket aerators at Walmart. Hopefully they will do until the power is back. My most expensive fish are bichirs, so I'm not that worried about them, but I'm hoping my loaches and others make it ok too. I plan to maybe go home on Friday and check on everybody and do some big water changes just in case the biofilter is messed up. I wouldn't worry too much about temperature. It shouldn't get cold enough any time soon to really hurt your tropicals. The natives should also be ok as long as they have aeration, unless any of them are really cold water fish and the water gets a little warm without AC. Some water changes wouldn't hurt just to make sure no ammonia or nitrites build up without filtration.

Next time, store some battery-operated airpumps and supply of batteries. We often forget these things are very essential to keep our fish alive during power outages and other emergency purposes.

Is it possible to have a generator (assuming it is not pricey there)? I have one here thankfully in case of power outages.

Keep doing water changes! What do you have in your apartment for heat?

small warm/cool water water changes for temp control

hit up the auto parts store.. see if you can find an inverter that hooks to a car battery (if you can park within extension cord range of yer appartment... pulling the battery out of yer car will leave you stranded once its dead and you will have no way to recharge it)

What part of ohio are you in? Im near cleveland and we have all of our power,..if your close and need something (warm water or w/e) we might be able to work something out.

inverters are your friend. get one and run your pumps and everything

I don't know about your water but I did water changes on Saturday here in Lexington,KY and the was was 76 degrees so you might check to see what your tap water temp is and go from there if you still have water pressure. I have 3 genorators here at my house in case the power goes out as I have almost 50 tanks and it would be killer for me if the power went out for more then 2 days.. as the price of gas to keep filling the fuel tanks would be killer also .. Good luck sorry I wasn't much more help ..

Clean your filters with used tank water and then put the bio-media in the tank to keep some of it alive.

You DO NOT want your filters turning back on without cleaning them first!

Do W/C's with dechlor'd water.
