Yeah, I thought I'd go the otherway and try to underdo the build to see if it would hold. So no glue and minimal screws for the tank and no 'real' bracing and no doubling up of six inch logs for the stand...but I will add some bracing later as that seems to be a wobbely mistake.

"For all the issues you had, it seems to have turned out to be a nice looking tank. Hope it continues to be problem free for you from here on out! "

Thanks, lets hope so. I guess the beuty of DIY is, if it does fail it also should be fixable.

"And any better pics of the stock and aquascaping? "

No not as yet. The light is only a single 4 footer and with the blackish back ground the camera is only picking up a silver dollar or two that happens past the front.

I might try with all the other lights off.

Hope it all works out for you. The stand makes me nervous. Hopefully you or your landlord have good homeowners insurance. Good Luck

Ye of little faith...

There's really not much sideways force involved in a tank. Someone would have to be clamoring all over it to for it to start to fail, I think...:)

The stand is a bit dodgy but the wieght of the water it has helped it stop vibrating when I touch it...

I think I'm going to put that in my sig lol, I don't blame ya, I'd hate to see anything happen but I think too many people over do it, It looks nice, i hope it works out for you, I'd like to do something like this someday. Did you coat it with anything, whatd you seal it with, etc? let me know

He He...Cheers fhawk

I used Zavlar Liquid rubber. I chose that because I hate stuff that smells and I wanted to do this in the house as it was winter at the time.

Also as promised it was easy to work with, you can put a thick coat on or lots of thin coats, you can apply wet on wet or wet on dry and it filled all the gaps from the internal frame work without any tape.

Next build I'm going to seal the glass with it instead of silicone.

one problem is tho...the stuff remains tacky outside the water...so my light, my lids and my hair are stuck fast to the top of the tank...

Didn't mean to be a buzzkill.
I just imagined that setup in the living room of my rental house after a minor earthquake (the ground moves in California) and my tenant explaining what happened and how he is going to pay for the damage.
The older I get the more my faith is challenged by reality.

I wish I had a photo of my tank after the Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989. All the gravel and decorations were in a one foot high pile at the left end of the tank and the fish were freaked the f**k out.

Not at all, part of the reason I did the DIY that way was to see how the 'overkill' mob would react.

Struth...I hadn't considered earthquakes, its pretty stable land over here.
