Prawns/shrimp tails and shell?? On/Off

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Anymore I have gotten so good at removing the shells it only takes a few minutes to remove shell and tail for a full pound of shrimp. And for the price being a good bit cheaper at this point its worth it to me. And I would rather clean it out now rather than later in the filter socks. My larger rays are fine with a whole large shrimp but the smaller ones still like them cut up into a couple pieces.

I peel the shell but always leave the tails as some ruf***e. Very seldom is there any tails left lying around, if so pick them out.

i buy the shrimp devained with shell on and feed them with the shell and there's noyhing left when their done. i don't know if it is true, but i heard that there's stuff in the tails that are good for color enhanceing

Walmart here sells raw shrimp 150-250 which is peeled and deveined. These are cocktail size and cost $4 a lb. I thaw a bag and just dump the whole thing in. The only time I leave the shell on is when making homemade food. I would not care to leave shell on when feeding but the times I have done this there has always been a piece or two of shell left in tank that I had to fish out.

If my rays happen to leave a piece of shell floating around after all of the feeding frenzy is over one of my aros or dats would definitely eat it up. I mainly feed pellets, so anything to do with shrimp is considered a delicacy to them LOL.

Mexican market 4.50 per pound Asian market 3.99 per pound. Better shrimp prices

I don't think the rays we keep , have ever seen or caught an asian farm raised shrimp sold by Walmart
On that , I'm sure they will eat any thing they can catch in the wild, little shrimp head on, shell on and tail spikes.
But in my tank once a month I feed em chopped fresh shrimp peeled

yea...we peel ours and cut into 1/3 but thats only cause our male is little. If the shrimp we buy are pop corn shrimp or small ones they just get cut in 1/2 large ones go into 1/3. I wouldnt risk leaving shell on there, but i gess it comes down to preference.

What's the risk?

Maybe there is no risk. No one peals shells for them in wild, but then again, who's to say that the shell DOESN'T ever kill them in the wild? 99.99% still leaves a 00.01% risk of possibilities. Shell or no shell, it's a preference issue, but it's you're fish, not ours.
