You keep mantids? That's cool. I found a good size one today so I caught it, and I'm gut loading some crickets for it to eat tomorrow.

I've read up about the cricket debate and found that as long as you take care of the crickets (clean environment, gutload etc..) it's safe.

Maybe you can ID the one I caught? :)

I wish I bred mantids. Well, we kind of do. We don't have any grass in our front yard, so we get massive amounts of the guys. Plus the plants wrap all the way around our house. Our house is kind of a haven for wildlife, everything from fence lizards to hawks. I think the biggest matis we've found in our yard was about 9-10" long.

If i bred mantids in my house, I'd be keeing those exotic species from rainforests.

Go ahead and post the picture, I can probably find out what kind it is.

Cool, that must make relaxing on the patio that much better! :)

It is pretty relaxing, unless a copperhead decides to sun himself by the bench. The nesting blue jays get pretty nasty too, along with the robins!!! The hummingbirds that nest in one of our small trees are fun to watch.

It looks like a normal Praying Mantis to me. Can't tell if it's male or female from the picture though. It's most likely a female, unless it attacked your hand when you caught it.

I was thinking female too because the wings are shorter than the abdomen. It didn't attack, in fact it walked right into the container. :D

any idea on the scientific name of it?

Definitely a female!!! A male would have gone ballistic! I have no clue what the scientific name is.

Wow, that would've freaked me out.

It was cool watching her destroy some crickets, but I'll be releasing her back into the bushes tomorrow.

I know there's people out there that keep insects the way we all keep fish, it was cool experiencing a small piece of that culture. :)

I like chasing them around. I love putting my cat near them, they're so cute when they try to attack.

I bet that looks cool :D

Too bad Fender is an indoor cat.

I was curious why the mantis didn't try to fly at all. She kinda stumbles around like she's drunk
