whats the requirements for these things? I have a big female and three males seperated. trying to breed them for food. so whats the requriments on these things? like feeding, heating, lighting, compatibility etc...

thanks in advanced

I have no idea. It seems like you're wasting your time on breeding them. Why not try breeding something easier like crickets? What do you plan on feeding them to?

I have kept mantids as pets before, but I never bred them. All I know is that they have very ravenous appetites. I use to know someone who bred them for feeders for his many different species of chameleons. I would think they would be an expensive animal to raise as a feeder, seeing how they must eat a lot of live food. Plus they're cannibalistic.

The real problem breeding them is: you have to keep all the babies seperate! And there's hundreds (thousands?) of them lol.

dont they kill the male while mating ?

i had one for a year scary how fast they are . plus they are really mean sob . i saw one on a documentry fending off a monkey lol

Its pointless raising them as feeders. Very expensive, lots of room, cannibalistic... Not to mention the ALTERNITIVES.

They make awesome pets though. Weve got a Carolina mantis at the nature center and he likes to chill on my shoulder while I do the rounds.

They make great pets but are not suitible for feeders as you need to feed them as well. Requirements variy as to species, ie, tropical flower mantids require higher heat anf humidity than do Asian temperates or US natives. Most are seasonal, at least the temperate ones. A freind used to rais the by just eclosing some currant bushes in his back yard under fine mesh and adding crickets everyday from hatching until late fall, then collecting the egg masses. Main thing is something to climb on and lots of live food.

well its a big female, us native.
forget breeding, but id like to know how to keep it as a pet. right now its in a 10 gallon, fully coverd and theres some of my aquarium plants in there and sand as substrate, aslo i have a uv bulb and a 15watt heating light i got at petsmart it helps heat a little bit and then i spray some water in there, cause i dont think it would drink out of a water bowl?
anything else i could do or need to know? im feeding it crickets i find and i buy right now + anything i find.
