I guess if you are getting something exotic and don't have a tank set up and don't trust your source of seeded media it would make sense to run the ammonia cycle. I personally don't like having an empty tank, have never kept anything exotic, and have tanks running, so I guess I'm not looking at it the right way. It is definitely better than stocking the tank with feeder goldfish or guppies, for many reasons.

Not sure about using a seeded media from a place as such but when I set up a new tank I generally add the media from my sump on my main tank running and put it into the new tanks sump. I have done this a few times and stocked the tank the same day without any casualities but in doing so I am using my own cycled media I trust and know I also will grab a sponge filter from my cycles tanks sump and throw it into the new tank. I think the idea of this is great but as others have stated your not sure what your getting disease wise. They may advertised disease free but can you really trust a fish store as they get so much fish in and out they cannot be sure its disease free unless as others said it is in a fishless tank cycle.

Yep I only had one tank at the time so I didn't have a choice. When I started my 75 gallon up and moved my Haitiensis from the 20 gallon that they were in, I seeded my sump because it's going from one system to the next with the same exact fish. Whenever I start my 20 long back up I'm simply going to take that same media back out my sump and put it back in the canister and pretty much instantly cycle it again.
I aleays have enoigh media on hand to jump start a cycle or establish a tank immediately. When I started up my 125 I used 3kg of bio home in the bottom of my trickle tower to start and threw in a fillet of tilapia for a week to build up bb. As for buying a sponge from someone or getting media from a lfs, I would have to be fairly desperate or out of other options. I don't know if there are parasites or any disease in there tank and would not want to start up a tank with issues right from the start
